Agronomy is a lot of work and we’re making some great strides with the conditions at our course. It was indeed a very tough and cold spring to grow grass but we managed to make significant improvements to the fairway turf. The over-seeding, liming, and fertilization that we did to the fairways this past fall are showing great results and they are filling in quite nicely. The irrigation upgrade project was recently finished and is now fully automated. This should be a big improvement to the course as a whole and allow us to manage the water properly.
Now, the greens are always a more challenging and lengthy process. The greens had existing excessive thatch and algae issues which are being addressed by a regular rolling schedule which has firmed them up considerably and will help compress the thatch layer. We will also continue with a core aeration plan this fall when the weather becomes a bit more mild. For the mid-season we have implemented a frequent light topdressing schedule which will help with the algae, thatch, and smoothness of the greens. With our aggressive seeding and fungicide program we should be able to make significant improvements, the program will help stabilize the turf conditions for much better long term health of the greens.
This fall we also plan to do a full aeration and overs-eeding of fairways and tees which we expect will produce good results. We would like to remind everyone that this is a work in progress and it will take a bit of time to get the course conditions up to our standards but when it is we believe that it will really be something special.
We appreciate your dedication and the passion you have for Melody Hill. We’re committed to producing excellent conditions that are in-line with our high standards as well as yours.
Please let us know if there is anything you see we can be doing better!
